Hiking as a Hijabi: Modest & Comfortable Gear Guide

Hiking as a Hijabi: What to Wear - Lizzy Helena Brown

If you're a hijabi who didn't grow up doing outdoor activities, it may be daunting to find suitable modest hiking clothes to wear for a hike. I grew up in Utah literally *right* at the base of a mountain and went hiking all the time!

Prior to becoming a hijabi, I would go for summer hikes in an exercise tank and leggings and layer up the sunscreen on my arms. For autumn hikes, I would wear leggings and a light jacket.

Now, I enjoy wearing looser pants and not having to put on so much sunscreen. For more info on the danger of certain sunscreen chemicals, check this article.

I want all hijabis to look natural and feel comfortable when doing outdoor activities, so here are some of my attire recommendations as an outdoor native.

Essential Modest Hiking Clothes for Hijabis

1. Long, Loose Hiking Pants: Comfort & Protection

You want long pants for hiking no matter how hot it is, and ones that are fitted at the ankle so no insects can crawl up your legs. I opt for styles in dark colors so I don't have to worry about sweat marks.

Shop for:

  • Hiking pants made with lightweight, moisture-wicking fabrics like nylon or polyester
  • Hiking pants with built in UV protection to further protect your skin
  • Pants with zippered pockets--you'll need the extra storage and don't want to worry about stuff falling out.

I love these cargo pants from Columbia--they're loose, insect repelling, have secured pockets, and feature an adjustable drawstring waist.

2. Jersey or Workout Hijab (NO UNDERCAP)

You need a hijab that will stay in place and let your scalp breathe. In my opinion, jersey or athletic material hijabs are best for this. Look for pull-on styles or ones with minimal pins/magnets for maximum comfort and security on the trail.

Why no undercap?

An undercap can trap excess heat and moisture on your scalp, so opt for a single-layer, breathable athletic hijab made from sweat-wicking materials.

Lululemon Pull-On Hijab

This is my favorite hijab for hiking. The pull-on style is secure, frames the face nicely, and is made of a high-quality moisture-wicking fabric.

3. Layering Strategy: High-Neck Tanks & Breathable Jackets

I like to get some use out of my high-neck tanks, and this is the perfect time to do it. Layering a tank with a breathable jacket is a great way to keep you cool, and you could take it off if you have enough privacy.

I love this tank for hiking because it's breathable and has a high neckline.

Tip: Consider long-sleeve, loose-fitting tops made from moisture-wicking fabrics if you prefer full arm coverage without a jacket.

I love this hiking top by Columbia! It's loose, long sleeved, and a stunning orchid color.

4. Choosing the Right Hiking Footwear (No Sneakers!)

Investing in proper hiking shoes or boots is paramount for safety and comfort on trails. If you're going on a hike wearing sneakers, you're a) ruining your shoes and b) putting your ankles in danger. Sneakers lack the necessary ankle support, traction, and sole rigidity for uneven terrain, greatly increasing your risk of injury and discomfort.

Benefits of Purchasing Nice Hiking Shoes:

  1. They cost about as much as a nice pair of heels
  2. They last for years
  3. They are often under warranty, so if they get damaged, you may get a free replacement!

For summer hikes, I have two main options at my disposal. The first are my Lowa Focus GTX hiking shoes--they have a low top, reinforced toe, and are a super fun purple color.

The other option I have are my Vasque 7503 Breeze LT GTX boots. These boots have a high top, breathable mesh panels, are super lightweight, and are waterproof. Vasque does not make this exact 7503 model anymore, but they make other Breeze styles that are worth checking out. I'm in love with the soft grey-purple color they used for this design.

I choose between my warm weather high-tops and low-tops based on terrain. If there's a lot of rocky uphill sections on the trail, I'll go with my high tops. If the trail is more mild, I'll opt for my low tops.

5. Wide-Brim Hat

A wide-brim hat not only protects your face but also helps to keep your hijab secure and offers an extra layer of sun protection over your head covering.

This hat has a mesh vent panel for airflow, drawstring for security, and wide brim to keep the sun off your face. It comes in lots of fun colors!

6. Light Backpack

Have a light backpack to carry water, snacks, a first-aid kit, and perhaps an extra layer for changing weather conditions. Sometimes I'll pack in extra things to make it heavier if I want more of a workout.

Look for packs with good ventilation and comfortable straps.

I love CamelBak hiking backpacks for longer hikes because they have a built-in water pouch and long straw for easy hydration.
