9 Closet Organization Tips: What I Learned Working In Luxury Fashion - Lizzy Helena Brown

I worked in luxury fashion (briefly) during college. A big part of the luxury shopping experience is being in the store--the scent, the lighting, the decor, the amenities. A well-organized closet is essential. I've found having a thoughtfully designed space that feels good to be in will boost your self esteem! With these 9 tips, you can transform your closet into a space that feels like a personal boutique.

Invest in Quality Hangers
Cheap plastic or mismatched hangers can ruin the appearance of a closet. Invest in high-quality velvet or wooden hangers that offer a uniform look and protect delicate fabrics. Velvet hangers are excellent for preventing items from slipping, while wooden hangers are sturdier for heavier garments like coats or suits. I've opted for black velvet in my space, but wood ones look always look amazing.

Have a Signature Scent

You need to have a candle or room spray in your closet to curate a VIBE and keep your clothes smelling good. I can't understate the importance of this tip. My signature scent for my entire home as well as my closet is No. 4 by Crate and Barrel. I smelled it for the first time last October at Crate and Barrel on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, and I would describe it as love at first sniff. The main notes are cardamom, amber, and oakmoss. You need to find your love at first sniff scent, so always be on the prowl, and don't settle for whatever's around at TJ Maxx or Target unless you really love it.

Create Sections by Category
I know the usual advice would be when organizing, group similar items together—dresses, blouses, skirts, trousers, etc. This categorization helps you quickly locate pieces, streamlining your morning routine. Within these categories, you can further sort by color, season, or occasion, allowing you to view your collection cohesively. However, I like to group items by color and aesthetic, so each part of my closet tells a story and it's nicer to look at. This will really give you that *store* feeling.

Display Accessories as Decor
Instead of hiding bags & shoes away, display them as part of your closet’s decor. Clear acrylic boxes, open shelving, or dedicated drawers with velvet inserts can beautifully showcase your accessories while keeping them organized and easy to access.

Use Drawer Organizers for Smaller Items
Smaller items like silk scarves, belts, and statement jewelry can easily get lost in large drawers. Invest in drawer organizers to separate and store these pieces neatly. Consider velvet-lined trays to protect delicate items, and create specific sections for each type of accessory.

Keep Seasonal Pieces Stored Away
Maximizing your closet space means rotating your wardrobe based on the season. For luxury pieces you won’t be wearing for months—like winter coats or summer dresses—consider storing them in breathable garment bags. You can keep them on high shelves or in under-bed storage bins to create more room for your current-season items.

Add a Full-Length Mirror
No closet is complete without a full-length mirror. This not only adds to the aesthetic of the space but also allows you to check your outfit choices before stepping out. Opt for a sleek, high-quality mirror that complements your closet’s design and enhances the feeling of a personal fashion sanctuary.

Elevate Your Lighting
Good lighting is essential for showcasing your collection and making your closet feel more like a boutique. Use LED strip lights along shelves or under cabinets to highlight your favorite pieces. Soft, warm lighting creates an inviting atmosphere and adds a touch of elegance to the space.

Maintain Your Space Regularly
Every closet requires regular upkeep. Schedule time every few days to ensure everything is in its proper place and clean any surfaces. A consistent routine will ensure your closet remains a reflection of your style and investment in your clothing. Dust, vacuum, swiffer, whatever. Just do it at least once a week.
