Fiber art is something I've been into since I was a kid--I learned to crochet when I was 8, picked up sewing around the same time, started embroidery in high school, and sold some of my crochet work at makers' markets during college. When I found out my sister was pregnant with my niece, the first thing I did was look up baby girl crochet patterns. So when I found out I was expecting, I hit Pinterest and YouTube to find all the patterns I could.
The tragic closure of Joann Fabrics in my city had a silver lining--the yarn being 70%, 80%, 90% off. I stocked up on what feels like an insane amount of yarn and buttons, and I'm gradually working my way through it all.
This Collection
My vision for this baby collection is classic, child-oriented, and Nordic inspired. It helped to put a lot of thought into the color palette before I chose exact patterns, because now everything will look cohesive. There are pops of vibrant blues, oranges, and yellows, but for the most part, I decided to stick with forest tones. These are the colors that tend to look best on myself and my husband, they're the colors we reach for most, so that's probably what will look most natural on the baby. Seeing as the baby will be born in the autumn, fall and winter motifs are a main focus.
Here's some of what I've completed so far!
Granny Square Cardigan & Bonnet
I made this granny square cardigan from a free pattern tutorial on YouTube. I improvised the bonnet, which doesn't saying much about my skill level because it's just a granny square with a border and two i-cords. For the yarn, I used KC 3 Light Weight 100% cotton in shades River Run and Canyon.
I opted to leave the buttons off of the cardigan because I thought it looked nice open. I'll add them later if I feel like it!
Sky Blue Long-Sleeve Onesie & Bonnet
For this set, I used a little over a skein of Lion Brand Basic Stitch anti-pilling 4 Medium Weight 100% acrylic yarn in baby blue. I love how it turned out, and I had the perfect baby blue buttons to match! I wanted to make at least one set in that classic baby blue color. Here's the link to the pattern I used.
I'm planning on making some matching booties and doing some sort of decorative appliqué on the front center of the onesie, but I haven't decided what to do for that yet.
Cable Effect Sweater & Reindeer Hat
I've been wanting to learn to knit and felt like making a knit-like sweater. I found this pattern on YouTube and really liked it! It's crocheted in one piece so it only has two seams. I threw away the yarn label, but I know I used 100% acrylic medium weight.
For the hat, I used Lion Brand hue + me chunky wool blend 5 Bulky Weight in color 171X Artichoke. I freehanded this pattern using newborn measurements. I also freehanded the reindeer embroidery with the same brown yarn as the sweater and a yarn needle. I love how chubby and cute the reindeer looks!
Future Directions
I intend to update this blog post with more pictures as I make more progress in the collection. I need to make a few blankets, some toys, and definitely more clothing items.
